Do you need a hydrogeological assessment? We investigate, model and assess groundwater – from initial data research to a reviewable report. Our interdisciplinary team of hydrogeologists, water management specialists and software developers works nationwide for federal and state authorities, municipalities, water supply companies, as well as businesses in agriculture and industry.
When is a hydrogeological assessment required?
A hydrogeological assessment describes and evaluates subsurface conditions with regard to groundwater. It provides the technical basis for water-related regulatory decisions and is required in many approval procedures. Typical occasions include:
- Water law permit for the extraction, discharge, or diversion of groundwater
- Construction projects involving intervention in the groundwater system, such as excavations, dewatering, or underground garages
- WFD assessment including an assessment of the non-deterioration principle and the objective achievement requirement
- Rainwater infiltration, including design in accordance with DWA guidelines
- Wasserrückhalt und Moorwiedervernässung: Prognose der Auswirkungen auf Wasserhaushalt, Ökologie und Landwirtschaft
- Drinking water protection, water availability assessment, and risk analyses for water supply facilities
- Shallow geothermal energy: Assessment of the thermal use of the subsurface
Whether an assessment is required in your case depends on the project and the responsible water authority. If you are unsure, we can clarify this in a brief conversation — free of charge and without obligation.
What does a hydrogeological assessment include?
The scope depends on the specific question and the requirements of the responsible authority. In general, a hydrogeological assessment includes:
- Description of the geological and hydrogeological conditions at the site
- Groundwater levels and their seasonal range of variation
- Groundwater flow direction and hydraulic gradient
- Hydraulic conductivity of the existing geological layers (kf value)
- Assessment of the impacts of the planned project on the groundwater system
- Specific recommendations for action and, where necessary, proposed mitigation measures
The assessment is based on existing borehole and geotechnical data, GIS data and maps provided by state authorities, our own field surveys, and – where required by the specific question – numerical modelling. This allows us not only to describe the current situation but also to model scenarios over extended periods of time.
Our Approach
The process begins with a free initial consultation, during which we clarify the scope of the project, available data, and required effort. We then research and review the existing data and, if necessary, supplement it with our own measurements, technical support during drilling campaigns, or the installation of data loggers. Based on this, we develop the conceptual and, where necessary, numerical model, analyse the results, and summarise the findings in a reviewable report. Upon request, we can also support you throughout the further approval process and present the results to the relevant authority.
Technical Basis
Our team has been active in science and practice since 2016 and regularly publishes articles in relevant scientific journals. Examples can be found in our publications and references. We have worked on projects for, among others, the German Environment Agency and the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation. We contribute our expertise to committees of the DWA and DIN.
Insights into our way of working can be found in our Referenzprojekte. Das vollständige Leistungsspektrum finden Sie unter Consulting.
Why Hydro-Berlin?
We combine hydrogeological assessments with our own software development. This means we work consistently with a unified data basis, automatically check measurement data for plausibility, and can perform numerical modelling that goes beyond a mere description of current conditions — including groundwater flow modelling, rainfall-runoff modelling, and drought and heavy rainfall risk analyses.
We record project-specific measurement data directly on our monitoring platform ENOLA® and can continuously update it there over the long term. This means the assessment does not end with the final submission but remains the basis for ongoing monitoring.
